Selling through storage
This is a concept used in another game I played that worked quite well.
The concept was that there were two special slots in your bank that you could put bags in. Then using a command, you could place items into that bag with a sell price. Then you could advertise in the chat what sort of items you were selling, and so people could simply go to the bank, use a command and see what you are selling, and what it costs. then using another command, they could buy it, and you would get a notification that someone bought an item, and you would pick up the money the next time you stopped at the bank.
Another concept was sending people items through the bank, so that using a command you can send an item to one person at a price, and they can either accept the item, or decline it, which would send it back to you. Now the only way the could accept it is if they had the right amount of money in their inventory, so that once they accepted it, it would automatically take the amount it was sold for from their inventory and send it to you. So then you can pick up the money next time you swing by storage.
The advantages I see to something like this is that it would be harder to scam, and possibly impossible to scam in some situations, unless you know the person is too lazy to read the offer. Also this eliminates having to sit around town for long periods of time having to show people the items. All they have to do is go to storage, type a command and a name to view a certain persons items for sale.
Good idea? Bad idea?
Edit: Ack someone posted something similar already.

mmm. seems interesting. hopefuly they implement something similar in GW2.
The only problem I see is the other side of the coin.
That is, there's no much room for negotiation
If you want to sell an item, let's say an Ele Sword.
These used to be sold for 100k and ectos, but lately are becoming more
common and they are not as pricey. Most of the people I know
have one.
If you are selling one for 100k
and someone wants to make a counter offer,
How would that work?

Perhaps sell based on how much money is in storage rather than inventory eliminating using ecto as a comodity?
As for counteroffers, I'm not sure, I guess i didn't think about that...
I should probably say this is just a base idea for now, but obviously needs some tweaking.

Don't know if this is the best implementation, but we definitely need a better way to sell. On the other hand, where is that picture of the dead horse being beaten?

I believe, Anet said that they could not implement a bidhouse because of the resources it will take from the network. If someone knows where that info is please add link.
But for now, I guess we are stuck in the current system. That is, until GW2

i hope in gw2 we get to set-up stalls and put any items then set a price and go afk while people buy your things.

Things like this have been suggested already, me being one of the people posting ideas like this.
The current problem people like posting up is that there'll be heavy lag in the towns/outposts if your character must be active.
But I wouldn't mind this in GW2.

I suppose it depends on how they view trading.
Trading where you have to stand around unable to do anything else repeating your sales patter means your using game time to earn money.
Setting up an automated selling system that maybe even works when your offline is something they may not ever want.
Since they tell us little it affects any ideas we come up with, if only they gave us a clue occasionally we could focus ideas better and cut down on wasted effort.
I for one would favour another way of trading to the present one, if for no other reason than to reduce the spam messages that are overwhelming in some areas.
